Citi Launches Custody+ to Unify Traditional Securities and Bitcoin Operations
Citi is rolling out Custody+, a unified custody platform that brings traditional securities and Bitcoin under one operational framework.

According to The Currency Analytics, the service targets institutional clients currently splitting workflows between crypto-native custodians and legacy banking infrastructure. The launch lands later this year and marks a structural shift in how Tier-1 banks absorb digital asset exposure.
What changes operationally
The pitch is consolidation, not new crypto custody rails. Custody+ lets clients run settlement, exchange, treasury, and data operations across both asset classes with near real-time visibility. Chris Cox, Head of Investor Services at Citi, framed the value around eliminating the operational gap between the two systems — no latency, no parallel workflows.
- Single custody framework: one counterparty across asset classes
- Continuous visibility across settlement and treasury flows
- Open architecture: clients can integrate digital assets selectively or build proprietary offerings on top of Citi's infrastructure
The optionality matters. Few incumbents offer this level of integration on regulated bank rails, and the bank reportedly spent several years building the stack before formal launch.
The payments and stablecoin layer
Alongside Custody+, Citi is advancing Citi Token Services — a real-time cross-border payment product operating via tokenized deposits. The mechanism bypasses correspondent banking entirely; funds move across borders on blockchain rails.
Separately, Citi has been in discussions with Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, and Bank of America on a joint stablecoin. No timeline or issuance structure has been disclosed. The signal is coordination among four major institutions, not yet a defined product.
Regulatory gating and structural verdict
Launch timing isn't accidental. The Clarity Act — legislation aimed at resolving which digital tokens qualify as securities versus commodities — heads to a vote in September. Citi CEO Jane Fraser publicly positioned the bank as a leader in digital assets while flagging that current legislation requires refinement.
The verdict: Custody+ addresses operational fragmentation, the most cited friction point for institutional Bitcoin allocation. Near-term impact depends on September's regulatory outcome — Clarity Act passage materially expands addressable demand. Until then, the product is infrastructure deployed ahead of fully cleared rules. Bullish on plumbing, conditional on policy.
