THORChain 3.20 Upgrade Enables Direct Native Swaps for Monero and Zcash
20 protocol upgrade, opening native swap routes for Monero and Zcash against Bitcoin, Ethereum, and stablecoins, according to The Defiant.

THORChain has activated its 3.20 protocol upgrade, opening native swap routes for Monero and Zcash against Bitcoin, Ethereum, and stablecoins, according to The Defiant.
The release converts two of crypto's highest-volume privacy assets into first-class routing pairs on the cross-chain DEX. No wrappers, no bridges — direct settlement through native vaults, per The Defiant's report on the upgrade.
What changed structurally
Version 3.20 extends THORChain's continuous-liquidity architecture to XMR and ZEC. The Defiant states the upgrade enables direct swaps from these privacy assets into BTC, ETH, and stablecoin denominations.
The practical shift for traders is the entry/exit path. Privacy-coin liquidity that previously cleared through OTC desks, wrapped instruments, or fragmented DEX pairs can now route through on-chain pools in a single transaction. That compresses execution time and removes intermediary custody risk on the way in or out of a privacy position.
What to verify before sizing positions
The Defiant confirms the routing capability but not pool depth or fee curves. Before deploying capital, run these checks:
- Per-pool liquidity for XMR/BTC, XMR/ETH, ZEC/BTC, ZEC/ETH. Shallow pools on privacy pairs have historically produced disproportionate slippage, particularly during volatility spikes.
- Effective swap fee. Cross-chain routes carry premium gas overhead versus same-chain trades; the realized cost on small positions can erase the routing advantage.
- Settlement finality. Confirm native vault routing versus synthetic or pegged alternatives to gauge counterparty and reorg exposure.
- Slippage tolerance settings. Privacy pairs tend to swing harder on thin books; pre-set slippage caps protect against pool front-running and MEV extraction.
Yield sustainability verdict
Native privacy support closes a long-standing structural gap in cross-chain routing. The utility signal is real, but volume migration from existing OTC channels and wrapped alternatives is the metric that matters. Monitor pool TVL over the next 14 days as the primary indicator — whether privacy traders consolidate on-chain or simply test the new routes will determine if 3.20 holds long-term liquidity or fades into the background.
